At the Eve the hot was the only major concern of the participants at the first edition of the lapinarello cycling marathon. The granfondo completely renewed attracted much curiosity for the courage to propose a new courses and the new “french” departure.
The violent storms that struck Treviso during the night forced the organizers to an emergency change: lots of roads in Treviso and along the circuit were completely closed up by trees, branches and rubbish, although the great work done by civil protection and fire departments. Many members were not frightened by the incessant rain which feel at 6 this morning and they were regularly in Piazza dei Signori for the departure, that was delayed for 2 hours. It was impossible to climb the Monte Grappa, so all the cyclists faced the average circuit with few changes: 130 km without the backbone of Montello.
“it was a difficult choice” – the event organizer, Andrea Pinarello said - “ but we could not put on risk the safety of the cyclists with roads wet and partially obstructed by branches or whole trees blown down this night. We thank all volunteers, civil protection and firefighters for their great work and all cyclists for their patience and understanding. We give you appointment with Monte Grappa climb next year.
Many famous faces at the start, beginning from the professionists: Mario Bruseghin, Dario Cioni, Filippo Pozzato and Matteo Tosatto. Many athletes enjoyed them: skiers as Christian Zorzi and Giorgio Di Centa, Karen Putzer and Magda Genuin, usual participants to the Pinarello, but also Yuri Chechi and Antonio Rossi, and, unexpected, the F1 champion Jarno Trulli, who said: “today I got two wheels, I leaved at home the other two. I’m happy to be here, cycling is a real passion to me.”
Subscriptions exceeded all expectations: 3200 enrolled, and over 300 participants to the Gourmet. A diversified presence, as ever happen in this race, with a strong female component, 370 women, and more than 400 foreigners. Cyclists approved the choice of a race with less exaggerated competitiveness, and for the first time they enjoyed themselves with the beautiful view of the heart of Treviso. Thanks to the distribution of the race number and the Expo, situated in the most important squares of Treviso (Piazza Borsa, Piazza dei Signori, and the Loggia dei Cavalieri) saturday the city, for the first time, really “lived” the race with cyclists from all over the world who walked among the centre with or without their bicycles.
